Join us in History Week 2010 for a walk down the streets of the past and into the lives of those you pass. Explore the biographies of our leaders, those who shaped our world and the ordinary worlds of lesser known identities.
This year’s History Week promises to be as inspiring, enlightening and exciting as the last. With over 140 events state wide, we are buzzing with anticipation.

Voices from the Street: The Annual History Lecture

An elegant evening of compelling history, delicious food and fine wine in the gorgeous setting of Government House.
Join Associate Professor Bridget Griffin-Foley as she explores the history of participatory media in Australia; from letters to the editor in nineteenth-century journals like the Bulletin, to today’s talk-back radio and what John Laws has labelled ‘dial in democracy’.

Presented by: The Australian National Maritime Museum
View the changing faces of those who shaped Australia - Indigenous people, early explorers, convicts, first emigrants, diggers on the gold fields,
maritime workers, child migrants, post- war migrants and boat people. Also see how dress and hair styles changed over one hundred years among
serving men and women and competitive swimmers.

Faces in the Street
Presented by the Historic Houses Trust of NSW and the Government Architect's Office
What are the stories behind the carved faces on Sydney’s sandstone buildings? Who are they and what do they represent?
NSW Government Architect Peter Mould will present an illustrated talk focusing on the sculptures that adorn many of the city’s nineteenth-century
public buildings including the General Post Office, Chief Secretary’s Building and Sydney Hospital.
An associated one hour walking tour led by Heritage Architect Joy Singh is available before and after the talk.

Faces from Australia’s Underworld
Presented by the Department of History and the Nicholson Museum at the University of Sydney
Australia's Underworld', a new unit offered by the History Department at the University of Sydney in 2010, encourages students to explore Australia’s forgotten stories: the cross-dressers and prostitutes, crooks and impostors, maverick reformers, entertainers and oddballs who find little place in the 'national story', but whose lives are stitched into the fabric of our past. How do historians frame questions to capture the richness of social? experience? What sources and research techniques do they employ? Learn how Sydney’s newest historians go about the task, when students and staff present? their projects in lively visual and oral presentations at the Nicholson Museum.?

Fashion on the Street: Photographs by Bruno Benini
Presented by the Powerhouse Museum
Italian-born, Melbourne-based Australian fashion photographer Bruno Benini (1925-2001) took to the streets with glamorous models to capture international and Australian fashion. To learn more, join Anne-Marie Van de Ven, curator of the exhibition ‘Creating the look: Benini and fashion photography’ for a talk followed by an exhibition tour.

Through their eyes: learning about the past
Presented by Tranby Aboriginal College and the History Council of NSW
The History Council of NSW and Tranby Aboriginal College are partnering to host an event with Wyanga Aged Care Services. Hear stories of the first hand experiences of senior Aboriginal community members and Elders from inner-city Sydney. Young Aboriginal student researchers from the Communications program at UTS and Tranby Aboriginal College will work with Aboriginal seniors and Elders to record and present their life stories. Students will also collect photographs and other material to enrich their historical research. The life stories and memories will be presented at a special event, featuring interviews with the participants and photographic displays. Light refreshments will be served.

Reserve Bank of Australia Museum of Australian Currency Notes
As part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, we are displaying a grand photographic wrap on our building’s façade. It shows faces in the street who have witnessed important events in Martin Place throughout the past century. We invite you to walk down the Martin Place of the past and delve into their stories, while along the way exploring our museum to learn about the fascinating history of the faces on our banknotes.
